Whether you’re looking to generate new business on home turf or within a specific industry, networking is an essential skill for continued growth. Here the CBHC Partners share their advice on how to make the most of your opportunities…

1. Make a positive first impression.
It’s never a good idea to network if you’re not feeling your best. People pick up on positivity and enthusiasm, and are likely to form an opinion of you in seconds. Give some thought to how you want to be seen and make sure you’re always on top form.

2. Prepare.
If possible, read the delegate list before the event and highlight any particular companies or individuals that you’d particularly like to speak to – suppliers as well as customers. Keep your interactions focused and have a goal in mind.

3. Listen.
Don’t feel you have to launch into a sales pitch with everyone you meet. Listening is usually far more effective – make some quick notes on the back of the person’s business card and contact them later, once you’ve had a chance to think about how you can help them.

4. Commit.
Try to spend more time with fewer people, especially if the event is a regular occurrence which attracts a similar audience. That way you’ll get to know people better, and you never know what connections and referrals could ensue. You’ll also avoid gaining a reputation for being interested only in those who seem to offer direct financial gain.

5. Follow up.
We’re not suggesting you spam the entire list of delegates, or try to ‘Link In’ with them all either. If you’ve taken business cards, and ideally made a few notes on each, get in touch to remind them who you are and suggest next steps. It may be that you can help someone straight away, or they may be interested to receive your regular newsletter, for example.
