Running a business is a 24/7 commitment which requires a whole host of skills – and stamina. So if you’re the one in charge, it’s vital to make sure your get up and go… hasn’t got up and gone!

Believe it or not, we’re passionate about all forms of accountancy and helping businesses to thrive! Here are some of our tips for staying on top:

1.    Eyes on the prize

A question we regularly ask business owners, which has a bearing on everything else, is: “why did you start?” Maybe you felt overworked and underpaid. Maybe you felt unappreciated, had a burning desire to be your own boss and/or wanted to increase your wealth. Whatever the reason, it was strong enough for you to make a decision. Stay focused on your original goals.

2.     Work out what you like doing

As a business owner the buck stops with you, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything. There are always going to be tasks which drain your energy and demotivate you. Identify which tasks you enjoy and which you hate, then consider whether your time is being spent in the way which most benefits the company, and you, and whether you can delegate more.

3.    Little victories

No-one in business expects certainty, but in such changing times as these it can be harder than usual to take a long term view. A good way to maintain a sense of progression is to break goals down into smaller wins, allowing you to hit targets more regularly and create more reasons to celebrate!

4. Recharge your batteries

It may start to feel that you have the lowest holiday quota in the company. As the boss, you need to allow time to relax and unwind. This is common sense, of course, but you’d be amazed how many of our clients refuse to take time off. Invest in your own work life balance to ensure you have sufficient energy – and enjoy yourself!

5. Re-write your business plan

No, we’re not slipping back into number crunching mode! Reviewing your vision for the company and setting new challenges and goals can give you a real motivational boost. Explore a change of pace, diversifying into new markets, raising the bar on quality and service, or increasing your professional network – make sure you and your business stay ahead of the rest.
